Why does ChatGPT mention our competitor and not us?
Usually because the competitor is easier to find, clearer about what it sells and mentioned more often by others. It is rarely about who is best, but about who the AI assistant has the most and clearest sources on.
The usual reasons
- The competitor has a page that answers the question directly. You do not.
- The competitor is mentioned in trade media, overviews and forums the assistant links to.
- The competitor has more and newer reviews.
- Your website does not say clearly what you sell, to whom and where.
- Your important content loads with JavaScript or is blocked for AI crawlers.
How to find the cause
Ask the question in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google, and look at the sources the answers link to. If the competitor is named on those pages and you are not, you know where to get in. Then compare your own page on the topic with the competitor’s.
What you can do
- Write a page that answers the question better and more directly than the competitor’s.
- Contact the sites the assistant cites and ask to be mentioned where relevant.
- Ask satisfied customers for reviews.
- Fix the technical issues that make you hard for crawlers to read.
