What is the difference between SEO and AI visibility?
SEO is about ranking high in a list of links. AI visibility is about being named in the answer AI writes. Good SEO is the foundation, but AI assistants also weigh what others write about you and how clearly you answer customer questions.
What they have in common
Both need pages that can be crawled and indexed, content in the HTML, and answers to what people search for. Many AI assistants use search engine indexes, so without SEO there is rarely AI visibility.
Where they differ
- The result: in SEO you get a position among ten links. An AI answer typically names three to five companies, and the rest are invisible.
- The sources: AI assistants combine information from many sites, so reviews, trade media and forums about you count for more than in classic SEO.
- The form: AI quotes short, precise answers. Pages that answer directly in the first sentences are used more often.
- The measurement: there is no ranking to track. Instead you measure how often you are named on a fixed set of questions.
What should you prioritise?
If your technical SEO is in place, AI visibility is the next step: answer pages, structured data and mentions elsewhere. If the technical basics are not in order, start there, because it helps both.
